Z A K U A, the Origins
A light wind, a fresh sea breeze, blows in the summer night. Darkness has given way to daylight in the French Basque Country, while the waves continue to crash on the rocks of the coastline. It is August 2017. Some 10 km south of the seaside resort of Biarritz — a prestigious and historic place on the Atlantic coast reputed to be the pearl of the shore in the extreme south-west of France, with its beautiful residences of the former nobility and upper middle class dominating the seaside.
In the picturesque village of Guéthary (Getaria in the traditional language of the Basques), on the terrace of the restaurant le Poinçon, sits a young woman AMBITIOUS and full of character; immersed once again in the depths of a creative debate. Who is she?
MATHILDE GUIRAUD. Born on December 28, 1991, Capricorn is none other than the creator and designer of ZAKUA. A purpose that she’s had inside her for a long time.
That night, the business manager was leaving a biarrot restaurant. She had come to this second home of French cuisine to enjoy dessert with her friend Peio — a smart boy, an investor with a creative spirit always on the move. The duo, in search of the typography of its logo, has already been brainstorming for several days; more determined than ever to find the one that would represent the brand of bags and accessories in skins finely processed in our renowned French tanneries.
It’s almost 11:00. While tasting his Patxaran (a Basque liqueur with a sweet plum flavour), Peio grabs a pen and starts to pencil on a paper towel. In the minutes that follow, the rectangular support is transformed into a logo; the letters of Z A K U A superimposed perfectly on the white surface, come together and form the geometric silhouette of a pouch.
A decision that is not insignificant, since: “… at the time, not being able to find a clutch bag for my cousin’s wedding, I decided to make the model I imagined. My sewing know-how enabled me to create the ideal accessory for the occasion,” says Mathilde Guiraud, who draws her prototypes in the form of sketches and then determines the materials, particularities and assembly methods.
Her tagline in three words? Travel, discovery, and inspiration.
Tenacious and very attentive, the designer of handcrafted leather goods (for both men and women) is attracted by the pieces of choice — as much in her work as in her daily life. And when she is in front of the thousands of leathers, in the rooms where the skins are exposed, it is with her eyes closed that she could select the most qualitative natural materials, whose touch is revealing for this professional: indeed, she has herself been a French craftsman (upholsterer decorator) and knows the world of leather to her veins; moreover, she also has a wide knowledge of the codes of luxury (previously in charge of a 5-star restaurant).
In a dynamic of support to the workers of the region in which she finds herself at the time of the conception of a collection, and in a concern of work impeccably done, Mathilde Guiraud tirelessly ensures that the articles she creates and designs are produced by the finest craftsmen. A work of ants at the centre of creation to transform precious materials into extraordinary objects, at the crossroads between the beautiful and the useful.
Thus begins the story of ZAKUA, equipped with considerable assets on the scene of the fashion industry and contemporary luxury — full of audacity in the image of its designer. Resources at the service of the world of local craftsmanship and its authentic manual techniques.
MADE IN FRANCE, ZAKUA is committed to the engineering excellence that permeates these workshops – combining with panache an extraordinary meticulous art with cutting-edge technology.
Coming from a family of shopkeepers, the designer designer of bags and small luxury leather goods ZAKUA has Basque blood on her father’s side. His grandmother and father were born respectively in Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
She has always had a deep respect for values. From there, testify his attachment to his heart by his city of prediction Miarritze.
